Bottle Labelling Challenges

Bottles come in every shape imaginable — cylindrical, tapered, square, oval, and custom moulded. Each shape demands different label sizing and application techniques. The curved surface means flat labels must conform without wrinkling, and the product inside often creates moisture, oil, or chemical exposure that the label must withstand.

Sizing by Bottle Type

Cosmetic Bottles

  • Dropper bottles (15-30ml): 40mm x 20mm to 50mm x 25mm
  • Pump bottles (100ml): 70mm x 35mm to 80mm x 45mm
  • Pump bottles (250ml): 90mm x 50mm to 110mm x 55mm
  • Spray bottles (100ml): 65mm x 30mm to 75mm x 40mm

Drink Bottles

  • Glass bottles (330ml): 130mm x 50mm wrap or 70mm x 50mm front
  • Wine bottles: 90mm x 120mm front label + 60mm x 80mm back
  • Spirit bottles (700ml): 100mm x 80mm to 120mm x 90mm front
  • Water bottles (500ml): Full wrap 200mm x 55mm

Cleaning Product Bottles

  • Trigger spray (500ml): 120mm x 70mm front
  • Squeeze bottles (500ml): Full wrap 220mm x 65mm
  • Small bottles (100-250ml): 80mm x 45mm to 100mm x 55mm

Material Requirements

Bottle labels face constant handling, moisture, and product spillage. The material must be:

  • Waterproof: Essential for any bottle. Condensation alone will destroy paper labels.
  • Oil-resistant: Cosmetic oils, food oils, and cleaning chemicals must not degrade the label.
  • Conformable: Must wrap around curves without lifting at edges.
  • Squeeze-resistant: Flexible bottles are compressed during use — the label must flex without cracking or peeling.

Vinyl is the standard material for all bottle labelling. It is flexible, waterproof, oil-resistant, and prints at photographic quality.

Clear Labels for Bottles

Clear vinyl labels are exceptionally popular for bottle labelling. On glass bottles, they create the impression that the design is printed directly onto the glass — a look associated with premium spirits, craft beverages, and luxury cosmetics. On plastic bottles, clear labels integrate seamlessly with the container colour.

Wrap-Around Application

  1. Clean the bottle surface thoroughly
  2. Peel the backing from one end only
  3. Align the leading edge vertically on the bottle
  4. Slowly rotate the bottle while pressing the label down with your other hand
  5. Smooth with a squeegee to eliminate air pockets
  6. Press all edges firmly — edge adhesion is critical on bottles that will be handled

Frequently Asked Questions

Waterproof vinyl is essential for all bottle labelling. Paper labels fail from condensation and handling moisture. Vinyl is waterproof, oil-resistant, flexible, and produces photographic print quality.

Clean the surface thoroughly before applying, press all edges firmly with a squeegee, and allow 24-48 hours for full adhesive bond. Edge lifting is almost always caused by surface contamination or insufficient edge pressure.

Yes, but your design colours will be affected by the bottle colour showing through. Use white ink behind elements that need true colour reproduction.

For a standard cylindrical 500ml bottle, a front label of approximately 90x55mm or a full wrap of 200-220mm x 55mm works well. Measure your specific bottle as shapes vary.
