Why Jar Labels Need Special Attention

Jars are one of the most common containers for small businesses, used for candles, food preserves, cosmetics, honey, spices, and bath products. But labelling a curved cylindrical surface with a flat adhesive label presents unique challenges — wrinkle-free application, correct sizing, and material compatibility all require careful planning.

Standard Jar Sizes and Label Dimensions

Small Jars (30-120ml)

Typical products: sample cosmetics, lip balms, small candles, spice jars, wedding favours.

  • Front label: 40mm x 30mm to 50mm x 40mm
  • Wrap-around: 100-130mm x 25-35mm
  • Lid label: 35-45mm circle

Medium Jars (120-340ml)

Typical products: candles, jam, honey, body butter, face cream.

  • Front label: 55mm x 45mm to 70mm x 55mm
  • Wrap-around: 150-200mm x 35-50mm
  • Lid label: 50-65mm circle

Large Jars (340ml+)

Typical products: large candles, pickles, sauces, bath salts.

  • Front label: 75mm x 55mm to 90mm x 70mm
  • Wrap-around: 200-280mm x 50-70mm
  • Lid label: 65-80mm circle

How to Measure Your Jar for Labels

  1. Diameter: Measure across the widest point of the jar
  2. Circumference: Wrap a piece of string or tape around the jar and measure the length — this is your maximum wrap-around width
  3. Available height: Measure the flat area where a label can sit without touching the shoulder curve or base
  4. Lid diameter: Measure the lid top and subtract 4-5mm for comfortable fit
  5. Front label: Typically 40-50% of the circumference for a front-only label

Front Label vs Wrap-Around

Front Label

Covers only the front face of the jar. Easier to apply, works on slightly irregular surfaces, and leaves the jar visible from the sides. Best for transparent products where the contents are part of the visual appeal.

Wrap-Around Label

Wraps partially or fully around the jar circumference. Provides more design space for ingredients, branding, and regulatory information. Requires more careful application to avoid wrinkles and misalignment on curved surfaces.

Front + Back Labels

Two separate labels — branding on front, information on back. Popular for food and cosmetic jars where regulatory text would clutter the front design. Allows different designs on each side.

Best Materials for Jar Labels

  • Matte white vinyl: The most popular choice. Waterproof, fingerprint-resistant, premium feel. Ideal for candles, cosmetics, and artisan food.
  • Gloss white vinyl: Maximum colour vibrancy. Good for products with photographic imagery or bold colours.
  • Clear vinyl: Creates the no-label look on glass jars. The product inside becomes part of the visual presentation.
  • Metallic vinyl: Gold or silver for premium positioning. Particularly effective on dark glass or amber jars.

Application Tips for Jars

  • Clean the jar surface with isopropyl alcohol before applying
  • Start from one edge and smooth along the curve — never try to place the whole label at once
  • Use a squeegee wrapped in soft cloth to press firmly without scratching
  • For wrap-arounds, align one edge vertically, then slowly wrap, pressing as you go
  • Warm the label slightly with a hairdryer for better conformability on tight curves

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the diameter across the widest point, wrap string around for the circumference, and measure the available height excluding the shoulder curve and base. For lid labels, measure the lid top and subtract 4-5mm.

Front labels are easier to apply and show the jar contents from the sides. Wrap-arounds give more design space for ingredients and branding. For food and cosmetics, front plus back labels are popular.

Matte white vinyl is the most popular — waterproof, fingerprint-resistant, and premium feel. Clear vinyl creates a no-label look on glass. Metallic adds luxury positioning.

Not if applied correctly. Start from one edge and smooth along the curve. Warming the label with a hairdryer improves conformability on tight curves.
